Burgess Shale Site

Fodor's Review:

A World Heritage Site, the Burgess Shale Site, on a fossil ridge near Field, British Columbia, was once on the bottom of the ocean and contains the fossilized remains of 120 marine species dating back 515 million years. Guided hikes (maximum 15 people) are the only way to see the actual fossil sites, and they're popular, so make reservations. The hikes are conducted July through September, from Friday to Monday, trail conditions permitting. Groups meet at the Yoho Brothers Trading Post in Field. The going is fairly strenuous; the round-trip distance is 20 km (12 mi). A steeper (3.6 mile round trip) hike leads to the Mt. Stephen trilobite fossil beds. Guided hikes are also offered to extensions of the Burgess Shale fossils in Kootenay and Banff national parks. Allow a full day for any of the hikes.

  • Cost: Hikes C$37-C$69
