The heart of the city is Parc Mont-Royal itself -- nearly 500 acres of forests and meadows laid out by Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903), the man responsible for New York City's Central Park. Not far away from the park and perched on a neighboring crest of the same mountain is the Oratoire St-Joseph, a shrine that draws millions every year. South of the oratory, on the other side of the mountain, is Westmount, one of the wealthiest Anglophone neighborhoods on the island. Its Francophone twin -- the equally prosperous Outremont -- skirts the mountain's northeastern slopes.
