Auberge du Vieux-Port

$$$-$$$$, Vieux-Montréal

Fodor's Review:

Rumor has it that it was here that Suzanne took Leonard Cohen to her loft by the river and fed him oranges and tea that came "all the way from China" -- a tidbit to keep in mind if you're coming to Montréal for a romantic weekend. Suzanne -- actually dancer Suzanne Verdal -- is long gone, but the Auberge's stone and brick walls, brass beds, and exposed beams will almost certainly please your sweetheart. The casement windows overlook either fashionable rue St-Paul or the Vieux-Port, and on warm summer nights you can sip white wine on the rooftop terrace and watch the fireworks competitions. A full breakfast is served in Les Remparts, the hotel's French restaurant. Warning: make sure that your room is in the main building and not in the St. Paul annex. Pros: rooftop terrace has perfect views of the harbor, as well as easy access to Vieux-Port and rue St-Paul. Cons: cramped elevator and noisy rooms on rue St-Paul side.
