Montréal's grandest hotel successfully blends Edwardian style -- all rooms have marble baths, and some suites have working fireplaces -- with modern amenities. Careful and personal attention are hallmarks of the Ritz-Carlton's service: your shoes are shined, there's fresh fruit in your room, and everyone greets you by name, which is probably why guests have included such luminaries as Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, who were married here in 1964. Power meals are the rule at Le Café de Paris, where politicians and business executives meet to hash out deals. The lovely garden in the courtyard is a favorite spot for afternoon tea. Pros: lives up to Ritz standards of luxury and service; great shopping within a five-minute walk. Cons: poor Métro access and less-than-perfect soundproofing

I had a wonderful time at the Ritz. I don't know what rooms the other commenters stayed in but mine was top notch. I have stayed at the Ritz in Philly and I have to say I would rather stay in Montreal anytime. Great service, people, food and the atmosphere.

Cease and Desist with the Whining!

Yes, this hotel is old! Yes, this hotel could probably do with a revamp of its bathrooms. But all the people here who are complaining seem to be whining about the fact that they paid a super-discount rate for the most basic level of room at a luxury property and are bitterly disappointed that they weren't given the keys to the Royal Suite. Get over yourselves! Sometimes you only get what you paid for, people! To all those reading this...I've been going to this hotel for years (nearly 20 now..highly recommend rooms 705 and 908--king bed and 2 dbls, respectively) and I've NEVER had a bad room or a bad experience with the staff. Both are delightful. I've never encountered such a devoted hotel staff in all my years of travel. In fact, most times that I've stayed there I've left with a free bag full of toiletries simply because I commented how much I liked them at the front desk (10 face soaps, 10 body soaps, 10 shampoos, 10 conditioners, 10 bath gels). I will grant that the basic rooms (those at the very end of the hallways) ARE small and not as nicely decorated since they were part of an addition to the hotel in the 1950s, but these rooms are usually reserved for those who book through expedia or priceline. I've stayed at the Waldorf in NYC and the Biltmore in L.A., and they ALSO give the most basic rooms to those customers. If you use their own website to reserve you'll almost always be upgraded and have your requests (high floor, view, # of beds) happily fulfilled. If you want modernity and brutalist furnishings, go to the Hotel Gault or the Hotel Saint-Paul, but if you want old world, plush, history-laden elegance, stay here. Truly, this is a world class property. And to the person who complained about the "stuck-up Frenchy" or whatever...maybe it's because WE AMERICANS sometimes ourselves act like the bad and off-putting stereotype of the "Ugly American" during international travel...just a thought.

What a major disappointment!!! Definitely not up to par to other Ritz's that I've stayed at. The lobby and service were quite adequate - but the rooms were from the year 2 - and I don't mean 2000!! The wallpaper was filthy, the room was very small, and to say that the alleged "marble bathroom" is in desperate need of renovation would be an understatement!!! I actually thought we had checked into the wrong hotel!!!
