Loyalist Burial Ground

Loyalist Burial Ground Review

The Old Loyalist Burial Ground was established on this site soon after the United Empire Loyalists arrived in 1783. It closed as a cemetery in 1848, however, and fell into disrepair. In 1994, the Irving family restored it as a gift to the people of Saint John. Brick and granite walkways were constructed, memorial gates were specially carved, and hundreds of trees and thousands of flowers were planted. A highlight of the grounds is a magnificent beaver-pond fountain created to depict the hard work and tenacious spirit of the city's founders and those who followed them.
