Basilica Cathedral of St. John the Baptist

Basilica Cathedral of St. John the Baptist Review

This 1855 Roman Catholic cathedral in the Romanesque style has a commanding position above Military Road, overlooking the older section of the city and the harbor. The church is rich in stained-glass windows, side altars, and statuary. The centerpiece of the sanctuary is The Dead Christ, made of Carrara marble in the mid-19th century by the Irish sculptor John Hogan. A museum with vestments and religious objects is next door in the Bishop's Palace, where a harp recital takes place on Thursdays, July-September at 1 ($5).
