India Gate

India Gate Review

Consistency and quality in service and food make this one of the busiest restaurants in St. John's for evening dining, takeout, or the popular weekday lunch buffet. Lunch turnover is high, and the buffet steamers are continuously replenished with steaming "rice pillow," mulligatawny soup, lamb, and vegetable korma. In the evening, you can choose a five-course dinner for two ($50-$60) or share options such as butter chicken or the exceptional prawns nilgiri (prawns in a rich sauce of spices and cashews). The presence of the owner on-site and the (recorded) sitar music add to the inviting atmosphere. Regulars have been known to spend an entire meal speculating on the secret behind the perfect rice.
