Be sure to visit Grenfell Handicrafts in the Grenfell Historic Properties complex. Training villagers to become self-sufficient in a harsh environment was one of Grenfell's aims. A windproof cloth that they turned into well-made parkas came to be known as Grenfell cloth. Mittens, coats and table clothes are embroidered with motifs such as polar bears and dog teams. There is a large selection of other handicrafts and most are locally made.
