Cosmopolitan Toronto Hotel

$$$, Old Toronto

Fodor's Review:

Tucked away on a side street in the heart of Toronto, this über-boutique hotel, which opened in late 2005, makes you feel like you're in a European city rather than Canada's biggest metropolis. It's truly an oasis in a concrete jungle; here an Eastern aesthetic and spirituality are seamlessly blended with typical Western hotel amenities. Each suite contains floor-to-ceiling windows, flat-screen LCD TVs, a gleaming kitchen, comfy living room, a washer and dryer, and a bubbling gemstone fountain (which can be turned off anytime). Ask for an "03" suite between floors 17 and 23 for the best view of Lake Ontario, or blow your budget and rent the split-level penthouse for C$2,500. The on-site Shizen ("nature" in Japanese) Spa was expanded in 2006 and contains a 12-person hot tub. Doku 15, the lobby restaurant, decorated in tones of orange and mahogany, offers pleasing Japanese-inspired dishes and has knowledgeable service staff. "The Cosmo," as locals call the hotel, is poised to be the in place to be for at least the remainder of this decade. Pros: private and quiet, hipness factor, great breakfast buffet. Cons: side street dark at night, trendiness may get stale, no handy newsstand or kiosk.
