If you can live without a doorman and 24-hour room service, the St. Regis might be for you. The 1916 building has just been totally revamped into an upscale boutique property in the downtown core. Rooms and suites come in various shapes, sizes, and configurations (sofa beds and adjoining doors are good family options) as befits the building's original architecture. All have king- or queen-size beds as well as a choice of en suite bathroom styles -- some offer only a shower, but make no mistake, the showers are first-class. While there are no views, and no in-house restaurant, the building does have a Starbucks as well as Gothams, one of the city's best steak houses. Guests get a discount at the state-of-the-art health club across the street. Pros: Hot location, choice of room styles. Cons: No views, on a major intersection.
