Between May and August, the University of British Columbia opens its student housing to visitors. Budget travelers looking for clean and secure, if basic, accommodation can choose from single or twin dorm rooms with shared bathrooms at the Pacific Spirit Hostel, or single rooms with shared baths, shared kitchens (without dishes and pots), and some fabulous views in Gage Towers. A low-rise building next door houses several freshly decorated studio and one-bedroom suites with private baths, balconies, and kitchenettes, some of which are available year-round. The campus, on a scenic point about 20 minutes from downtown, has an indoor pool and student-priced eateries open to the public. Pros: Well priced, good family option, great pool, close to buses. Cons: A 20-minute drive (35-minute bus ride) to downtown.
