To stay at the Sylvia in June through August, you must book six months to a year ahead: this Virginia-creeper-covered 1912 building is popular because of its low rates and near-perfect location: about 25 feet from the beach on scenic English Bay, 200 feet from Stanley Park, and a 20-minute walk from Robson Street. The rooms and apartment-style suites vary from tiny to spacious. Many of the basic but comfortable rooms are large enough to sleep four and all have windows that open. The restaurant and bar are popular and its tenure on English Bay has made it a nostalgic haunt for Vancouverites. Pros: Beachfront location, close to restaurants, a good place to mingle with the locals. Cons: Older building, parking can be difficult if the lot is full, the 15-minute walk to the downtown core is slightly uphill.
