A hundred years old in 2008, this ivy-draped harborside château and city landmark has aged gracefully, with top-notch service and sympathetically restored Edwardian decor. The 176 different room configurations include standard and harbor-view rooms with 11-foot ceilings. Turret rooms with Jacuzzi tubs are a little-known romantic option. State-of-the art gym equipment, Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs are all planned for 2008. The hotel is a tourist attraction, but a guests-only lobby separates hotel guests from the throng. Pros: Central location, historic ambience, professional service, great spa and restaurant. Cons: Small-to-average-size rooms and bathrooms, tourists in the public areas, pricey.

Tea at the Empress was very expensive and not worth it!!! Have had high tea in nicer hotels for less money. Three out of the five chairs we sat in had tears in them. The hotel needs to be refurbished. We were two families traveling together and one of the rooms was so small you could walk past each other in the room. Both rooms were clean and bathrooms updated. Hotel at 100% capacity and staff was friendly but obviously stressed. Concierge was almost never at her station. The bellman and doorman gave us information because no one else was available.
