Original art, Viennese antiques, and dramatic decor shine in this lavish, 1885 Italianate mansion. Set in a parklike acre of gardens in the tree-lined Rockland district, the Fairholme has an open, airy feel in its spacious, high-ceiling rooms. The suites are massive -- generally about 900 square feet each -- and most have a king bed, a view, and a fireplace. The Olympic Grand Suite boasts lush white sofas, a bay window, and a private ocean-view deck. In the lower floor Fairholme room, the bathroom alone is big enough for a chaise lounge and palm tree next to the double soaker tub. Small groups like the two-bedroom Rose Garden suite with its kitchen and private deck. Elaborate breakfasts are served by the fireplace in the art-filled dining room, or at tables for two on the porch. Pros: Peaceful setting, beautiful decor, lavish breakfasts, charming hostess. Cons: A mile from downtown, larger rooms are pricey.
