Whistler and Blackcomb Travel Guide

With two breathtaking mountains, Whistler and Blackcomb, enviable skiing conditions, championship golf courses, more than 200 shops, 90 restaurants and bars, an array of accommodations, spas, hiking trails, and what may very well be the best mountain bike park in the world, it's no surprise that Whistler consistently ranks as the top ski resort in North America.

Located 75 mi north of Vancouver, Whistler was named in honor of the whistling marmots that lived high in the mountains: the innovative plan for a car-free village was conceived in the mid-1970s and opened for business, along with Blackcomb Mountain, in 1980. Vancouverites as well as adrenaline junkies from around the globe arrived here to enjoy the great outdoors and stayed permanently for the abundant array of everything else -- from all-night dance parties to bear watching, fabulous sandy beaches, and spectator events. Today, Whistler encompasses 100 square mi of land, most of it (92%) zoned for rural use and the rest occupied by tourist, residential, commercial, and municipal buildings. Scattered up and down the valley are a dozen residential areas separated by forest and greenbelts.
