Ballooning in Phoenix-Scottsdale

Ballooning

A sunrise or sunset hot-air-balloon ascent is a remarkable desert sightseeing experience. The average fee -- there are more than three dozen Valley companies to choose from -- is $135 per person, and hotel pickup is usually included. Since flight paths and landing sites vary with wind speeds and directions, a roving land crew follows each balloon in flight. Time in the air is generally between 1 and 1 1/2 hours, but allow 3 hours for the total excursion.

Adventures Out West and Unicorn Balloon Company (480/991-3666 or 800/755-0935. www.adventuresoutwest.com) has horseback riding, jeep tours, and hot-air-balloon flights that conclude with complimentary champagne, a flight certificate, and video.

The Hot Air Balloon Company (602/482-6030 or 800/843-5987. www.arizonaballooning.com) offers private and group sunrise and sunset flights with sparkling beverages and fresh pastries served on touchdown.

Hot Air Expeditions (480/502-6999 or 800/831-7610. www.hotairexpeditions.com) is the best ballooning in Phoenix. Flights are long, the staff is charming, and the gourmet snacks, catered by the acclaimed Vincent restaurant, are out of this world.
