Tennis in Phoenix-Scottsdale

Tennis

With all of the blue sky and sunshine in the Valley, it's a perfect place to play tennis or watch the pros. The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess hosts several national championships, including the annual Franklin Templeton Men's Classic and the State Farm Women's Tennis Championship. Major resorts, such as the Radisson, Phoenician, Wigwam, Fairmont Princess, and JW Marriott Desert Ridge (and many smaller properties), have tennis courts. Granted, tennis plays second fiddle to golf here -- but many of the larger resorts offer package tennis deals. If you're not staying at a resort, there are more than 60 public facilities in the area.

Camelback Village Racquet & Health Club (4444 E. Camelback Rd., Camelback Corridor. 602/840-6412. www.dmbclubs.com.) is a private tennis facility, health club, and spa featuring lighted courts, ball-machine clinics, and lessons. Visitors can enjoy club amenities for $17 a day.

Kiwanis Park Recreation Center (6111 S. All America Way, Tempe. 480/350-5201) has 15 lighted premier-surface courts (all for same-day or one-day-advance reserve).

Phoenix Tennis Center (6330 N. 21st Ave., West Phoenix. 602/249-3712) is a city facility with 22 lighted hard courts.

Scottsdale Ranch Park (10400 E. Via Linda, North Scottsdale, Scottsdale. 480/312-7774. www.scottsdaleaz.gov/econnect) is a city facility with 12 lighted courts. Lessons are available here, too.
