Wineries / Breweries, St. Helena
Fodor's Review:
When visiting Stony Hill Vineyard, it's easy to imagine that this is what the Napa Valley was like 20 years ago, before many of the wineries started building glitzy visitor centers and charging tasting fees. When you call to make a reservation for a tour and tasting, you'll get directions for following the unmarked road that winds up the hill north of St. Helena to their secluded property. From this perch, you can have beautiful views of rolling hills in between stands of old oak and cypress trees. The tour is casual and conversational -- the guide relies on questions from visitors instead of reciting a canned spiel. The visit ends with a tasting of their excellent unoaked chardonnay. If you're lucky, you might get a nip of their dry gewürztraminer or riesling, though they're often sold out.
