The turnover among L.A.'s nightspots can be enough to make your head spin -- it's almost as dizzying as the diversity that's available virtually every night of the week. Hollywood and West Hollywood, where hip and happening nightspots liberally dot Sunset and Hollywood boulevards, are the epicenter of L.A. nightlife. The city is one of the best places in the world for seeing soon-to-be-famous rockers as well as top jazz, blues, and classical performers. Movie theaters are naturally well represented here, but the worlds of dance, theater, and opera have flourished in the past few years as well.

The Calendar section of the Los Angeles Times (www.calendarlive.com) also lists a wide survey of Los Angeles arts events, especially on Thursday and Sunday, as do the more alternative publications, the LA Weekly and the Citybeat Los Angeles (both free, and issued every Thursday). Call ahead to confirm that what you want to see is ongoing.
