Rancho Bernardo
Rancho Bernardo straddles a stretch of I-15 between San Diego and Escondido and is technically a neighborhood of San Diego. Originally sheep- and cattle-grazing land, it was transformed in the early 1960s into a planned suburban community, one of the first, and a place where many wealthy retirees settled down. It's now home to a number of high-tech companies, the most notable of which is Sony. If you want to spend some time at the nearby San Diego Zoo Safari Park, this community, home of the world-class Rancho Bernardo resort, makes a convenient and comfortable headquarters for a multiday visit.
