Britt Scripps Inn Review

A block west of Balboa Park, this inn occupies the former mansion of the Scripps newspaper family. A $6 million investment has turned the beautifully maintained 1887 Queen Anne into a stunning example of lavish Victorian decor. The carved oak woodwork shines throughout, and the two-story stained-glass window is magnificent. The nine guest rooms—with antique beds, claw-foot tubs, rain-head showers, heated towel racks, and plush robes—spell old-fashioned luxury. Rates include a full breakfast, afternoon wine and cheese, and modern amenities like free Wi-Fi. Stroll the grounds to visit the first camphor tree in North America, planted in 1865. Balboa Park is a 10-minute walk across Cabrillo Bridge.
