San Diego County is served by a coordinated, efficient network of bus and rail routes that includes service to Oceanside in the north, the Mexican border at San Ysidro, and points east to the Anza-Borrego Desert. Under the umbrella of the Metropolitan Transit System, there are two major transit agencies: San Diego Transit and North County Transit District (NCTD). The staff at the downtown Transit Store sells passes and can help plan your travel.
Almost all stops on the San Diego Trolley light rail system connect with a San Diego Transit bus route. NCTD routes connect with Coaster commuter train routes between Oceanside and the Santa Fe Depot in San Diego. They serve points from Del Mar North to San Clemente, inland to Fallbrook, Pauma Valley, Valley Center, Ramona, and Escondido, with transfer points within the city of San Diego. NCTD also offers special express-bus service to Qualcomm Stadium for select major sporting events.
In Coronado the ATV Van Co. operates a bus service.
San Diego Transit fares range from $1 to $4; North County Transit District fares are $1.75. Discounted fares are available for seniors and for people with disabilities. The Transit Store sells packets of discounted universal tokens that can be used interchangeably on buses and the trolley. Most transfers are free; request one when boarding. Schedules are posted at each stop, and the buses usually are on time.
