Jeanty at Jack's

$$, French, Financial District

Fodor's Review:

Jeanty at Jack's. Chef Philippe Jeanty, who made a name for himself in the wine country (first at Domaine Chandon and then at his Bistro Jeanty and Père Jeanty), oversees this brass-and-wood, three-story brasserie located in what was Jack's restaurant, a San Francisco destination for steaks and chops since 1864. The food today is as French as the chef, with cassoulet, steak frites, rabbit terrine, steak tartare, and coq au vin among the offerings. The tomato soup with puff pastry will make you forget the bland canned stuff of your childhood. Business types stream in at lunch; dinnertime is quieter. This is the place to bring anyone who really eats what the French eat: pigs' feet, lambs' tongues, veal kidneys -- they're all here.
