An offshoot of the Il Fornaio restaurant and bakery chain, this tile-floor, wood-panel complex combines a café, first-rate bakery, and upscale trattoria with a comfortable outdoor seating area. The mostly Tuscan menu includes crispy thin pizzas from a wood-burning oven, house-made pastas and gnocchi, and such tantalizing main dishes as tagliata, beef tenderloin slices with green peppercorn sauce. Each month the dishes of a different region of Italy are featured on a separate menu. Il Fornaio has become as comfortable as an old shoe, which means the kitchen too often rests on its laurels.
