Russian Hill

  • 1. Lombard Street

For the ride of your life, follow in Steve McQueen's skid marks up and down Russian Hill. A trip over the precipice of Filbert or Jones will make you feel like you're falling off the edge of the world, and be sure to tackle crooked Lombard.

  • 2. Macondray Lane

Duck into this secret garden lane to enjoy one of San Francisco's hidden gems.

  • 3. San Francisco Art Institute

Contemplate two sweeping visions, either Diego Rivera's The Making of a Fresco Showing the Building of a City or the priceless view of the city itself.

Map of Russian Hill

Essentially a tony residential neighborhood of spiffy pieds-à-terre, Victorian flats, Edwardian cottages, and boxlike condos, Russian Hill also has some of the city's loveliest stairway walks, hidden garden ways, and steepest streets -- brave drivers can really have some fun here -- not to mention those bay views. Locals flock to Polk and Hyde streets, the hill's main commercial avenues, for their excellent neighborhood eateries and fantastic window-shopping.
