The Russian River empties into the Pacific Ocean at Jenner, a wide spot in the road where houses dot a mountainside high above the sea. Facing south, the village looks across the river's mouth to Sonoma Coast State Park's Goat Rock Beach. North of the village, Fort Ross State Historic Park provides a glimpse into Russia’s early-19th-century foray into California. South of the fort a winery named for it grows Chardonnay and Pinot Noir above the coastal fog line. North of the fort lie more beaches and redwoods to hike and explore.
