Glass Beach

Glass Beach Review

The ocean is not visible from most of Fort Bragg, but go three blocks west of Main Street on Elm Street, and a gravel path leads to wild coastline where you can walk for miles along the bluffs. The sandy coves in the area you first reach from the road are called Glass Beach because this used to be the dumping ground for the city. That history is still apparent, although the pounding surf has pulverized the trash into a sparkling treasure. Look closely at the sand and you'll find the top layer is comprised almost entirely of sea glass, likely more than you've ever seen in one place before. You can gaze at the dazzling colors, but don't take any glass with you; it's now against the law. No swimming at this beach either, for safety's sake. Amenities: parking; toilets. Best For: sunset; walking.
