Sonoma Coast State Beach

Sonoma Coast State Beach Review

Sonoma Coast State Beach. The gorgeous sandy coves of Sonoma Coast State Beach stretch for 17 miles along the Hwy. 1 shoreline from Bodega Head to four miles north of Jenner, encompassing numerous beaches. Rock Point, Duncan's Landing, and Wright's Beach, clustered at about the halfway mark, have picnic areas, as do several others. A long road leads from the highway to Goat Rock, near the mouth of the Russian River at Jenner, with parking areas at different stops for views of the ocean and the long beach where harbor seals lounge. Shell Beach, 2.5 miles south of Goat Rock, is known for beachcombing, tidepooling, and fishing. Duncan's Landing, about two miles south of Shell Beach, is the most dangerous spot on the coast because of unpredictable surf; rogue waves have come up to the parking lot and have also swept people off rocks. If you're lucky you'll catch sight of migrating whales from any of the beaches, but Bodega Head is an especially popular perch for patient gazers. During summer months a few lifeguards are on duty at different spots, but strong rip currents and heavy surf are a treacherous combination that keep would-be swimmers on shore at all the beaches. Wright's Beach and Bodega Dunes have developed campsites. Pick up information about the beaches at state park headquarters at Hwy. 1 and Salmon Creek, about two miles north of Bodega Bay. Amenities: parking; toilets. Best For: solitude; sunset; walking. 707/865-2391. $8 per vehicle.
