Hotel Colorado

$$$, Glenwood Springs

Fodor's Review:

When you catch sight of the graceful sandstone colonnades and Italianate campaniles of this exquisite building, you won't be surprised that it's listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The impression of luxury continues in the imposing yet gracious marble lobby and public rooms. The sunny rooms and suites -- most with high ceilings, fireplaces, gorgeous period wainscoting, marble bathrooms, and balconies affording gorgeous vistas -- are designed to match. The notable (Teddy Roosevelt) and notorious (Al Capone) stayed here in the hotel's halcyon days. The on-site bike shop and white-water rafting outfitter can get you geared up for adventures outside the hotel. Pros: one of the most historic properties in the valley, large rooms, great views. Cons: no air-conditioning, some rooms need refurbishing.
