From breakfast under the antique crystal chandelier to evening sherry by the fire, the days pass grandly in this sumptuous 1883 mansion. Equidistant from Dupont Circle's establishment scene and U Street's antiestablishment one, the location is convenient for much of D.C.'s nightlife. But like the local couples who come here for romantic weekends, you might be tempted to stay in, particularly if you've booked a room with a Jacuzzi or a two-person claw-foot tub. The Lighthouse room, in one of the mansion's round turrets, is small, but three huge windows flood it with light, and an engaging view of the dog park across the street. A small swimming pool beckons in hot weather. Pros: Location, location, location; beautiful and lavish rooms; fireplaces in the winter, a pool in the summer. Cons: It is a B&B -- you may find yourself sharing a breakfast table; cheaper rooms are small.
