Taberna del Alabardero Review

A lovely formal dining room, skillful service, and sophisticated cooking make this restaurant one of Washington's best. Start with tapas, made even tastier by a half-off happy hour that goes until 6:30 pm on weekdays: rice studded with escargot and wild mushrooms, or smoky grilled chorizo. Proceed to a hefty bowl of chestnut soup or egg-soaked brioche and venture on to authentic paella and fine Spanish country dishes. French-toast-like torrijas are a light ending to this rich fare. The plush interior and handsome bar make things romantic and help attract a well-heeled clientele.

    Taberna del Alabardero Review

If you are a jaded diner looking for the next over-the-top next dining experience, this may not fit the bill. However, Taberna is very good at what they do: traditional Spanish food. There will be no foams, no emulsions, etc. Nice wine list - try any of the "De Castillo" red or white wines and you won't go wrong. Specifically: great paellas. My green side salad was memorable due to the surprisingly tasty dressing. Wonderful service: knowing it was a combination birthday/anniversary dinner, we were each given glasses of champagne before dinner and then a beautifully icing- scripted plate "Happy...etc." with a dessert on the house. Just some nice touches that made a memorable experience -- and that's what dining should be about.
