Art and Soul Review

Best known as Oprah's longtime personal chef, Art Smith is now serving the Washingtonian crowd at this funky Southern-fried spot, located in the Liaison Capitol Hill. The signature dish here is the hoecake, a once modest slab of fried cornmeal scarfed down by overworked and cash-strapped field workers during the 19th century. Smith and executive chef Wes Morton gussy up their hoecakes with a rotating cast of toppings: lately poached quince with walnut and a creamy, dreamy goat cheese-and-figs have been spotted pairing nicely with the bar's artisanal cocktails. Low Country classics such as shrimp with grits and fried chicken cloaked in decadent pepper gravy are also on hand.
