Cholesterol count be damned -- the conch fritters here taste like heaven on a plate. Regulars at this weathered restaurant floating on two roadside barges in an old fishing community include Keys characters, Sunday cyclists, local retirees, and boaters, who come to admire tropical birds in the nearby mangroves, the occasional crocodile in the canal, or the bands that play on weekend afternoons. Some locals say that Jack's doesn't have the biker-bar feel it used to, but the food's still good, and cheap. The menu also has fish sandwiches, burgers, fries, salads, and lots of beer. The crab cakes, made from local blue crabs, earn some hallelujahs, too. Jack's closes by 7 or 7:30, when the mosquitoes start biting.

What a fun place. We are from the Tampa area where there is Grouper everyplace you turn. The Grouper finers here were by far the best we have ever had. We will be back again and again!!

Most stop on way to Keys
Posted by Michael from Ft. Lauderdale, FL on 1/20/06
I was born and raised in S. Florida and have been to The Keys regularly since birth. Alabama Jacks is the one place we must stop at on the way back from boating in Islamorada or partying in Key West. My wife and I have driven from Palm Beach to Alabama Jack just for the Conch Fritters.
The service may not be fine dining, but we don't go there for service. We go there for great food in a great place.
If you're heading down to the Keys, or coming back, make sure you stop by here and relax for a little bit before continuing your drive in either direction.

Service Slacker but Fab Food

The interior wasn't as bad as I expected (based on the exterior). Menu selection is good; serving sizes were smaller than I expected (all served in paper or plastic containers) but the food was well cooked & tasty. Beer & coolers were a bit overpriced for the atmosphere ($4.50 for a cooler; $4 beer). Same waitress on 2 visits; she was lousy & unbelieveably rude but clueless that her comments were inappropriate and inconsiderate. We'll be sure to ask for someone else if we ever go back.
