¢-$$, North Miami-Dade
Fodor's Review:
This is as fun, relaxed, and unpretentious a resort as any you'll find in Miami. It's a good choice, however, only if you don't mind poor-to-nonexistent service and slightly antiquated furnishings. On its long pier, the only one of its kind in the city, you can have lunch while befriending pelicans who circle round the tiki bar and restaurant. Palm trees surround straw-roof huts right on the beach, where you'll also find a playground, a trampoline, and lots of water-sports choices. A full slate of activities, like sand-castle building and pool bingo, is organized every day from 10 AM to 9 PM. The rooms, each of which has a balcony, are divided slightly to be called suites, and all have tropical-theme quilts, big mirrors, pastel art, two TVs, and plastic orchids. The huge lobby has caged parakeets and is in general less swanky than the hotel's soaring neighbors. Its gift shops, loaded with schmaltz, are the perfect place to buy a Miami Beach snow globe. Pros: Good value, long pier leading out to the ocean, and a playground and activities for kids. Cons: Tackiness everywhere, needs updating, and minimal service.
