For a boutique hotel one block from the beach, this artfully designed retreat qualifies as a steal (by South Beach standards), especially with Continental breakfast included in the rate. The original 1937 floor plan of 50 rooms gave way to 22 spacious suites with king beds (or two queens), fully equipped kitchens, marble or hardwood floors, and free high-speed Internet access. One-bedroom suites also have dining rooms and queen-size sofa beds. And you're not just getting size. Marble counters, clever gooseneck faucets, well-chosen vases, and splashes of color liven up the otherwise muted, sophisticated grays and whites of the rooms. The Nassau is in the heart of the action yet quiet enough to give you the rest you need. Note: There's no bellhop and very limited parking. Pros: Big stylish suites with full kitchens. Cons: No pool, no restaurant, and meager free breakfast.

I stayed here in November 2006. My studio suite was fabulous -- clean, very roomy, with a comfortable bed, beautiful sink, well equipped kitchen, etc. The staff were helpful. The breakfast was only ok, and the hall looks funky, but the room made up for both of those. Friends were staying at much more expensive hotels nearby, which weren't nearly as nice.
