Southern ingredients get the fine-dining treatment without the pretension at celebrity chef Hugh Acheson's Midtown favorite. Empire State South does it all: towering build-your-own breakfast biscuits, tiffin (Indian lunchbox) daily lunch specials (these must be ordered by 11 am), beautifully prepared Georgia trout with green beans and pimentos at dinner, and the perfect espresso. For a lunchtime protein boost, order the Super Food entrée, a protein- and nutrient-rich plate of hanger steak, radish, pickled beets, squash, field peas, wheat berries, pickled pimentos, and apples. The wine list is one of the most diverse in the city.
