A Gothic-revival synagogue on Monterey Square houses the third-oldest Jewish congregation in the United States; its founding members settled in town five months after the establishment of Savannah in 1733. The synagogue's collection includes documents and letters (some from George Washington, James Madison, and Thomas Jefferson) pertaining to early Jewish life in Savannah and Georgia.

Mikve Israel is the oldest congregation in the United States practising Reform Judaism. The building is magnificent as are the volunteer tour guides. If you look uo when entering the cathedral sancuary, you wll notice a cross in the ceiling. When the Temple was built there were sufficient funds for construction, but not for an architect, so, plans were borrowed from a recently built church. The buildings accoustics are wonderful. A must see when visiting the city Sherman felt to beautiful to destroy.
