Fodor's Review:

Folks line up for a culinary orgy of fine Southern food, served family-style at big tables. For breakfast there are eggs, sausage, piping-hot biscuits, and grits. At lunch try fried or roast chicken, beef stew, collard greens, okra, mashed potatoes, and corn bread. Mrs. Wilkes made this place somewhat of a legend, and her grand daughter and great grandson are keeping it a family affair in more ways than one. Menus are a set price; kids under eight years of age eat for half price.

Come Hungry

Stopped here our first day in Savannah after a long morning of travelling. The food was wonderful. Just what home cooking is supposed to feel like. We had a great time and would love to return many times.

Just like grandma's cookin'!!!!!

I felt like I had gone back in time and that I was sitting at my grandma's table again! This was one of the best dining experiences I have ever had! The food was so authentically prepared, just like I knew when I was a youngster. I just didn't know to appreciate it then! Our table was very fun and animated and we felt like we got acquainted in just that short period of time! 5 stars!! 10 if I could give them!!

Southern Selection!

If you are like me and you are a northerner who's never really experienced southern cooking this is the best place to start. Basically, you get to try most all of the dishes that make southern cooking famous for $15! Also, this is a restaurant that fills to capacity meaning they seat you with others at tables of 8-10 people. It makes for a great experience if you enjoy meeting others and sharing great food. If this is not your style I would suggest elsewhere.

The Best Southern Food Ever

It doesn’t get any better. If you want true Southern food there is no better place on Earth. As all Savannahians know, if the Colonel made chicken this good he would have been a five star general. I have eaten at Mrs. Wilkes for 30 years and have never had a bad experience. Living in New York I know good food but I would trade 20 celebrity chefs for one Mrs. Wilkes.

No trip to Savannah is complete without a stop here!

Just like Sunday dinner at Grandmas! THe food is down home, traditional southern fare and you sit with others just like they're your family (except less drama). We love it, you will too!

Absolutely Wonderful!!!

This is an experience for everyone visiting Savannah! Lunch only, Monday - Friday. Truly wonderful southern cooking. (This place puts the Lady and Sons to shame.) I know that the lines are long but this is the one restaurant that is worth the time. Also the location is on one of Savannah's most beautiful streets.

A Yankee experiences southern food & hospitality

Posted by Retired_teacher from Chicago northwest suburbs on 5/26/07
After waiting in line for almost an hour I began to question our decision to dine at Mrs. Wilkes, but once seated I quickly learned that this experience was definately worth the wait. The service was quick, the waitstaff efficient.... and the food just kept coming! We must have had 30 serving bowls brought to the table, each one featuring a different option. My only complaint would be that I started out taking too large of portions and had trouble fitting everything on my plate. We soon discovered that our tablemates were a good fit and we truly enjoyed the social experience as well. These were the same people that had 'ignored' each other while standing in line together outside, but found a bond at Mrs. Wilkes dining table. Again it was proven that good food makes for good conversation and good companionship....
