Fodor's Review:

Unassuming and budget-friendly, Little Village sets a standard of friendly and attentive service to which every Chinese restaurant should aspire. We have roamed the large, pan-China menu and found a new favorite in everything we've tried: shredded beef, spinach with garlic, Shanghai noodles, honey walnut shrimp, orange chicken, dried green beans. Two words: go there.

You've Gotta Try It!

Head to China town before the dinner rush. The food is fantastic, the service is excellent but it does get crowded. By far one of the best meals we had on the island.

Disappointing

Posted by pixster from San Francisco on 5/12/07

After waiting about half an hour for a table for two on a Friday night, we ordered three signature dishes: the lettuce cup chicken ($8.95), the sizzling black bass ($18)and the minute chicken pan fried noodles ($8.95). The lettuce cups were good, but not great, with maybe some chopped pecans mixed in with the minced chicken and water chestnuts in a ginger tinged blend. The sizzling and steaming presentation of the bass made us the center of attention for about 60 seconds, but unfortunately the sizzle was the best part of the dish. The fish itself was mediocre, bland and oily. While the dark black bean sauce looked promising it was equally flavorless. We also ordered the minute chicken with cake noodles ($1.75 extra), but the sauce turned out to be bland brown gravy, not the red bead curd sauce that the menu promised. While waiting for our table we noticed that the majority of people there seemed to be fellow tourists -- never a good sign in Chinatown. Next time we'll try someplace with fewer awards on the wall but better food.

DO NOT visit with groups of three or five

Posted by lorism from Honolulu on 8/5/06

We just returned from Little Village Noodle House and urge groups with three or five people NOT to visit without a reservation. Groups with the same number holding a reservation should also be warned. Our family of six -- included a highchair, but since the restaurant does not take it into account, our reservation was for a group of five -- waited more than 1-1/2 hours after being told of a 20 minute wait. We regularly checked our status and were repeatedly told that we were next. There were a lot of people waiting and everyone was comparing waiting times. Most did not have a reservation. After 1-1/2 hours, we demanded a more specific time when we would be seated since everyone who arrived after us, many times over, had been seated. It was during this discussion that we discovered Little Village Noodle House has an unspoken policy that regardless of your place in line or how long your group has been waiting, the restaurant will always max out its tables. The restaurant has tables that seat 2, 4, 6 and 10 people. There are only two tables where they will seat 5 people. As long as groups of 6 or more arrive, we would continue to be skipped over in order for the restaurant to fill every seat at the table. The restaurant gave no apology - just a matter of fact statement that this was its policy and yes, we could end up waiting indefinitely if the two tables where they allow our size group decided to stay all night. When asked, the restaurant said they had no intention of disclosing this policy. Little Village Noodle House is a busy restaurant. Be warned about its seating practices. The same thing could happen with groups of three who would be skipped over indefinitely when groups of four continue to arrive. Like us, you could still be waiting to be seated.

Best Chinese food...ever!

Posted by Amanda from Honolulu on 3/9/06

Unique dishes, freshly prepared, and fast service characterize this great little place in the heart of Chinatown! Parking can be tricky, but the food is worth the effort. The ambience is lively and colorful, and the service is surprisingly fast for such a busy place.
