Airports in Honolulu and Oahu

Airports

Honolulu International Airport (HNL) is 20 minutes (9 mi) west of Waikiki, and is served by most of the major domestic and international carriers. It is "open-air," meaning you can enjoy those tradewind breezes up until the moment you step on the plane.

If you have time after you've checked in for your flight home, visit the Pacific Aerospace Museum, open daily, in the main terminal. It includes a 1,700-square-foot, three-dimensional, multimedia theater presenting the history of flight in Hawaii, and a full-scale space-shuttle flight deck. Hands-on exhibits include a mission-control computer program tracing flights in the Pacific.

To & From the Airport

Some hotels have their own pickup service. Check when you book.

A cumbersome and inefficient airport taxi system requires you to line up to a taxi wrangler, who radios for cars. At $2.50 start-up plus $2.30 for each mile, the fare to Waikiki will run approximately $25-$35, plus tip. If your baggage is oversized, there is an additional charge of $3.50.

Roberts Hawaii runs a 24-hour airport shuttle from the airport to most of the major hotels in Waikiki. The fare is $8 one-way, $14 round-trip. Look for a representative at the baggage claim. Call for return reservations only.

TheBus, the municipal bus, will take you into Waikiki for only $2, but you are allowed only one bag, which must fit on your lap.
