  Get the introductory package for best value

  This was our second stay at the Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas and we managed to snag the introductory package (5 nights in a studio for about $750, a $185 credit towards an Avis car rental, and 7000 bonus Starpoints) - in our opinion a very good value. (I'm a Starwood Gold member so this likely increased my chances.) Since my GF and I wanted more room to stretch out, we upgraded to a 1 bedroom villa for $100/night and were able to offset the upgrade cost by $350 via a 90-minute TS presentation, which also netted us a 50% off coupon for a future Westin stay (albeit not in Hawaii). We also extended our stay 2 nights with an award reservation.
  
  We were initially in a building 7 facing building 6 but were able to move to a really nice golf course view/partial ocean view room in building 6 the next night. It was quite peaceful relaxing outside and watching/listening to the various birds (nene geese, cardinals, mourning doves, chickens, and sparrows) and watching the sun set. Our villa was spacious and we had lots of room to cook, and were able to get really good in-room massages during our stay. Note: at times we could hear conversations through the wall adjoining the kitchen, but for the most part our neighbors were mostly quiet.
  
  We ate gluten-free at the onsite restaurant (Nanea), sampled gluten-free tapas at Bar Acuda in Hanalei, and cooked gluten-free by shopping at Healthy Hut in Kilauea (on Kilauea Road right off Kuhio Highway), Harvest Market in Hanalei, and at Foodland (right at the entrance to Princeville, just around the corner from the gas station and Lappert's) - they had some awesome gluten-free granola. Food can be expensive on Kauai so be sure to do some research before you arrive so that you know what dining options you have given your budget.
  
  Each studio/villa includes a small washer and dryer which is so convenient if you don't like to bring tons of clothes. There is also an small wall-mounted safe in the closet which can hold a 15 inch laptop plus a few items.
  
  We found the service to be generally quite good - the service express staff were very responsive, one or two concierges less so but still not too bad, and housekeeping was efficient.
  
  We had a late flight so we used the hospitality suite to freshen up before our flight - and the very friendly woman at the front desk let us stay for longer than the official 45 minute limit. (Be aware that room 1101 has a couch to relax on but room 1103 does not.)
  
  If you like to snorkel, Ke'e beach is about 25 minutes to the north (at the end of Kuhio Highway) and be aware that there can be construction or other delays on the road - during our stay the rains caused some minor slides on the hill descending from Princeville to Hanalei. Since there is very limited parking at Ke'e Beach and it is the starting point for the Kalaulau trail, be sure to arrive before 8AM if you want to park in the small lot near the bathrooms/outdoor showers. If you arrive later in the day, there is limited parking along the road as well as at a larger lot about a quarter mile from the beach.
  
  Room tips: 1) Get the introductory package (typically 5 nights in a studio for about $750, a $185 credit towards an Avis car rental, and 7000 bonus Starpoints) for best value. 2) Odd-numbered rooms in Building 6 face the golf course and have a partial ocean view so are quieter and more private than most, but be sure to stay as far from the A/C unit as possible. 3) Rooms in building 4 also face the golf course and are private, with no rooms across the hall, so they may be the quietest rooms of all. 4) You can request an upgrade to a 1-bedroom villa for $100/night and offset the upgrade by $350 if you can spare 90 minutes for the timeshare presentation. 5) You can request a late checkout for $25/hour. 6) You can request the hospitality suite (for free) if you have a late flight. 7) If you will be doing a lot of cooking for 2 or more people you might find the studio kitchen a bit cramped - tiny sink and very small stove.
