The Westin Maui Resort & Spa Review

The cascading waterfall in the lobby of this hotel gives way to an "aquatic playground" with five heated swimming pools, abundant waterfalls (15 at last count), lagoons complete with pink flamingos and swans, and a premier beach; the water features combined with a spa and fitness center and privileges at two 18-hole golf courses make this an active resort—great for families. Relaxation is by no means forgotten, though. The 15,000-square-foot Heavenly Spa has 16 treatment rooms and a yoga studio. Elegant dark-wood furnishings in the rooms accentuate the crisp linens of the chain's "Heavenly Beds." Rooms in the Beach Tower are newer and slightly larger than those in the Ocean Tower, and all rooms include a sofa bed. The resort's Wailele Polynesian Luau features family-style dinner and includes Maui's only "extreme" fire-knife dance finale.

A lobby waterfall gives way to an aquatic playground with five swimming pools, lagoons with pink flamingos, and a premier beach. All this water, and you haven't even reached the Heavenly Spa yet. Relax with an ocean view before and after your therapy in one of 16 treatment rooms or an outdoor cabana. Go local with a lomi lomi massage, a Hawaiian salt glow, or a tropical pohaku pedicure. Afterward, you'll be more than ready for your Heavenly Bed.

The hotel lobby is beautiful with its own large pond and waterfall. The staff was helpful. I am a Starwood Gold member and was treated very well. The room was a little small but had a great view of the ocean. The hotel is located close to other venues for shopping and restaurants. Whalers Cove is next door. I had read mixed reviews before I stayed there. I had no complaints. My experience was very good and I would stay there again.

Beware if you book an ocean view room...

...we did ten months prior to arrival (and they immediately charged us over $3000). Upon arrival we found that we were placed in a room with a view of the ugly high rise on the opposite side of Whaler's Village.

The front desk clerk told us with a straight face to walk out on the balcony and look to the left. That was considered an ocean view room.

Also note that we are Starwood Platinum, the highest loyalty level. If they treated us this shabbily (and remember this was not a last minute reservation) they will do it to you.

As an aside, I had four encounters with the concierge "service." Each time they were unfriendly and in some cases even rude. They will contact you before you arrive and offer you a gift. Please know that they want you to stop by so they can rope you into going on their vacation club (aka timeshare) tour. The gift? A box of chocolates so old they had turned white and powdery.

  • State cracking down on vacation rentals?

I've just had my reservations cancelled by owners (vrbo and airbnb) due to the apparent crackdown on vacation rentals.
