By Car

If you want to explore Molokai from one end to the other, it's best to rent a car. With just a few main roads to choose from, it's a snap to drive around here.

The gas stations are in Kaunakakai and Maunaloa. When you park your car, be sure to lock it -- thefts do occur. Drivers must wear seat belts or risk a $75 fine. Children under three must ride in a federally approved child passenger-restraint device, easily leased at the rental agency. Ask your rental agent for a free Molokai Drive Guide.

Car Rental

Budget maintains a counter near the baggage-claim area at the airport. Dollar also has offices at Hoolehua Airport, and your rental car can be picked up in the parking lot. Expect to pay $40 to $50 per day for a standard compact and $50 to $70 for a midsize car. Rates are seasonal and may run higher during the peak winter months. Make arrangements in advance because there may not be cars available when you walk in. If you're flying on Island Air or Hawaiian Airlines, see whether fly-drive package deals are available -- you might luck out on a less-expensive rate. Hotels and outfitters might also offer packages.

Locally owned Island Kine Rent-a-Car offers airport or hotel pickup and sticks to one rate year-round for vehicles in a broad spectrum from two- and four-wheel drives to 11-passenger vans.
