Fine Arts Building Review

This creaky building was constructed in 1895 to house the showrooms of the Studebaker Company, then makers of carriages. Publishers, artists, and even architect Frank Lloyd Wright have used its spaces; today the principal tenants are professional musicians. Take a look at the handsome exterior, then step inside the marble-and-woodwork lobby. The motto engraved in the marble as you enter says, "All passes—art alone endures." The building has an interior courtyard, across which strains of piano music and sopranos' voices compete with tenors' as they run through exercises. Visitors can get a peek at the studios and galleries and hear live music during Open Studios (4:30-9:30 on the second Friday of each month).
