Jane Addams Hull-House Museum

Jane Addams Hull-House Museum Review

The redbrick Victorian Hull House was the birthplace of social work. Social welfare pioneers and peace advocates Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr started the American settlement house movement in this house in 1889 and wrought near-miracles in their surrounding community, which was then a slum for new immigrants. Pictures and letters add context to the two museum buildings, which re-create the homey setting the residents experienced. The memorial is located on the UIC campus.
