York Harbor

Hiking and Walking

Cliff Walk/Fisherman's Walk. Two walking trails traverse the shore from near Harbor Beach. Just beside it in a small park, the Cliff Walk ascends its granite namesake, running past the summer "cottage" mansions at the harbor entrance. There are some steps, but as signs caution, tread carefully because of erosion. Fisherman's Walk, on the other hand, is an easy stroll. Starting across Stage Neck Road from the beach, it passes waterfront businesses, historic homes, and rocky harbor beaches on the way to York's beloved Wiggly Bridge. This pedestrian suspension bridge alongside Route 103 (there is minimal parking here) leads to Steedman Woods, a public preserve with a shaded loop trail along the York River estuary's ambling waters. You can also enter the preserve near the George Marshall Store in York Village Stage Neck Road, turn off U.S. 1, York Harbor, ME.

Cutts Island Trail. For a peek into the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, take this approximately 2-mi trail, part of the refuge's 800-acre Brave Boat Harbor Division. It's one of only a handful of trails in its 11 divisions. It's a prime bird-watching area. There's a kiosk at the trailhead. Seapoint Road, Kittery, ME. From Rte. 103 turn on Cutts Island Lane, continue on Seapoint Road, watch for sign. www.fws.gov/northeast/rachelcarson.
