Bash Bish Falls

Bodies of Water, Egremont

Fodor's Review:

If you have the time to wind your way to this far corner of South County, don't miss Bash Bish Falls. To get here, head south on Route 41, and then make an immediate right onto Mount Washington Road, which leads to Bash Bish State Park and the falls. The falls drop 200 feet into a pool. If you think you see a reflection in the water below, it may be the face of White Swan. White Swan was an Indian maiden, and the legend is that she stared into the water when she was grieving over a lost love. She had married a brave she loved but could not give him children. He had deserted her and took another wife who did conceive. She stared into the water, feeling abandoned and forlorn, when she thought she heard the voice of her dead Mother call to her from beneath the water. Just as she rose to leap into the pool, her former lover approached. He tried to save her but failed, and they fell the 200 feet together. His body was recovered, but hers was never found. The legend continues that in certain light you can see her smiling up at you from below the water.
