South End

Map of South End

Not to be confused with South Boston, this area, which hugs the south side of Huntington Avenue southeast of the Back Bay and due south of Chinatown, is another 19th-century development. But with its park-centered squares and blocks of extravagantly embellished bowfront Victorian houses, it's less Parisian in style than English. Today the area's multiethnic and diverse character draws from its mostly Hispanic and Asian residents, but Middle Eastern groceries have popped up along Shawmut Avenue, and the area also is home to a large gay population. The booming restaurant row along Tremont Street is the most visible sign of the area's recent gentrification.
