Coast Guard and Nauset Light beaches

Coast Guard and Nauset Light beaches Review

Under the domain of the National Seashore, roads and bicycle trails lead to this unbroken 30-mi stretch of barrier beach—the "Cape Cod Beach" of Thoreau's 1865 classic, Cape Cod. You can still walk its length, as Thoreau did, though the Atlantic continues to claim more of the Cape's eastern shore every year. The site of the famous beach cottage of Henry Beston's 1928 book, The Outermost House, is to the south, near the end of Nauset Spit. Designated as a literary landmark in 1964, the cottage was destroyed in the Great Blizzard of 1978. Coast Guard Beach has no parking lot of its own, so park at Salt Pond Visitor Center or at the lot on Doane Road and take the free shuttle to the beach.
