Nantucket Reds
Bermuda has its shorts, Fiji its sarongs. Nantucket's totemic clothing items are made of cotton dyed red so as to fade to a dull salmon shade. The reds were something of a secret code until they were singled out by The Official Preppy Handbook in 1980: "By their pink shirts ye shall know them" might be the watchwords for Nantucketers among the worldwide sailing community.
Now reds are as site-specific as Martha's Vineyard's Black Dog line (attempting to compete, in vain, with a satellite shop on Straight Wharf).
The principal purveyor of Nantucket reds is Murray's Toggery Shop on Main Street, which has catered to conservative dressers since the early 1900s. (Roland Macy worked here at his father's shop in the early 1800s before setting off to rewrite retailing history.) From baby togs to tote bags, you'll find everything you could want here in the way of reds. But for that weathered look that sets them off so well, you'll have to get out on the water.
